Facebook vs Instagram Ads for Fitness Coaches: Which Should You Use?

They run on the same system, but the feel is different. Here's how coaches should think about Facebook vs Instagram placements — and why you probably shouldn't choose.

Meta Ads planet

Coaches ask this constantly: “Should I run Facebook or Instagram ads?” The honest answer surprises people — you’re not really choosing between two platforms at all.

They’re the same machine

Facebook and Instagram both run through Meta Ads Manager. When you launch a campaign, you’re not picking an app — you’re picking placements: Instagram Reels, Stories and feed; Facebook feed and Reels; and a few others.

So the real question isn’t “Facebook or Instagram?” It’s “which placements get me leads for the least money?” — and the best way to answer that is to let Meta test them for you.

Let the algorithm choose (mostly)

For nearly every coach starting out, the right setting is Advantage+ placements — you let Meta show your ad wherever it performs, across both apps. The system is very good at pushing budget toward whatever converts cheapest.

Then you judge the result by one number: cost per lead. Not by which app you personally scroll more.

When the feel actually matters

That said, the two apps do attract slightly different energy, and it’s worth knowing:

  • Instagram is visual, younger-skewing, and Reels can deliver very cheap reach. It suits transformation clips, quick tips and personality-led content — a natural home for fitness.
  • Facebook still converts strongly and often reaches people with more disposable income and buying intent. Don’t write it off because it feels “older.”

If, after a couple of weeks, the data clearly favours one, you can lean into it. But let the numbers lead — not your personal taste.

What to actually do

  1. One campaign, Advantage+ placements on.
  2. One strong vertical (9:16) video — a transformation, a talking-head, or a client result. It’ll run across Reels, Stories and feeds.
  3. Run it for at least a week, then read cost per lead by placement.
  4. Double down on what’s working; trim what isn’t.

Stop agonising over Facebook versus Instagram. Run both, measure, and let your coaching business grow on whichever one your buyers happen to be using.

Common questions

Should fitness coaches advertise on Facebook or Instagram?

Usually both. Facebook and Instagram run on the same Meta ad system, so you don't really pick a platform — you pick placements. The smart move is to let Meta show your ad wherever it converts cheapest (Advantage+ placements) and judge by cost per lead, not by which app you personally prefer.

Is Instagram better than Facebook for personal trainers?

Instagram often feels more natural for fitness because it's visual and younger-skewing, and Reels can be very cheap reach. But Facebook still converts well and often reaches an audience with more buying power. Rather than guess, run both placements and let the data decide.

Do I need different creative for Facebook and Instagram?

One strong vertical video (9:16) will run across Reels, Stories and feeds and covers most placements well. If budget allows, tailor a square version for the Facebook feed. But start with one great vertical video before you worry about perfecting each placement.
