How to Get Your First Online Coaching Clients (Without Paid Ads)
No audience, no budget, no clue where to start? Here's the exact order of operations to land your first few online coaching clients — using what you already have.
The hardest client to get is the first one. Not because it’s technically difficult — because it’s uncomfortable. You want them to just appear. They won’t. So let’s go get them, in the right order.
Step 1: Mine the warm circle first
Forget strangers for now. Make a list of everyone who already knows you can coach:
- People you’ve trained in person
- Friends and gym mates who ask you for advice
- Anyone who’s messaged you a fitness question
These people already trust you. That trust is worth more than a thousand cold followers. Your first clients almost always come from here.
Step 2: Offer a “founding client” spot
Don’t launch a polished €200/month programme to strangers. Offer a small number of founding client spots to your warm list:
“I’m taking on 3 people to coach online. Discounted rate while I build this out — in return I’ll ask for honest feedback and, if you’re happy, a testimonial. Want in?”
This does three things at once: it lowers the barrier, it gets you paid, and it gets you the proof you’ll need for everyone after.
Step 3: Over-deliver — obsessively
Your first clients are not a revenue stream. They’re your case studies. Coach them like your business depends on it, because it does. Check in more than you promised. Celebrate their wins publicly (with permission). A handful of genuinely delighted clients will out-market any ad you could run.
Step 4: Turn results into proof
As wins land, capture them — screenshots of messages, before/afters, a quick “how’s it going” voice note you can quote. This is the raw material for every post, every DM, every future sale. (More on that in Instagram Content Ideas for Personal Trainers.)
Step 5: Ask for referrals — out loud
Happy clients will refer you. They just won’t think to unless you ask:
“Loved working with you. If you know one person who’d get a lot from this, I’d genuinely appreciate the intro.”
That one sentence, asked at the right moment, is the cheapest client acquisition there is.
Then — and only then — think about ads
Once you’ve got a few clients, real proof, and a clear sense of what your buyers respond to, paid ads stop being a gamble and become a multiplier. Run them too early and you’re paying to advertise something you haven’t figured out yet. (When you’re ready: How Much Should a Personal Trainer Spend on Ads?.)
The order that works
Warm circle → founding spots → over-deliver → capture proof → ask for referrals → then scale. Skip to “scale” and it’s slow and expensive. Follow the order and your first clients are closer than you think.

Common questions
How do I get my first online coaching client?
Start with the people who already know you. List everyone you've helped or trained, offer a small number of them a discounted 'founding client' spot in exchange for a testimonial and feedback, and deliver an amazing result. Your first clients come from warm connections and referrals long before they come from a big following.
Do I need ads to get coaching clients?
Not for your first handful. Ads amplify something that already works — they don't create demand from nothing. Get 2–3 clients organically, learn what your buyers actually respond to, gather proof, and then paid ads become a multiplier instead of a gamble.
How long does it take to get coaching clients online?
If you're proactive — reaching out, offering founding spots, asking for referrals — you can land your first client in a couple of weeks. Waiting for people to find your posts and DM you can take months. The difference is whether you go to them or wait for them.
